Professional Information

NHS Community Contact Lens Service

What is the NHS Community Contact Lens Service?

NHS Contact Lenses are provided on recommendation of an ophthalmologist for patients who have a medical necessity for a contact lens. For example:

  • Post-surgery

  • Post-trauma

  • To help with a congenital abnormality (e.g., aniridia)

  • Keratoconus and other corneal ectasia

(NB: This list is not exhaustive)

The person being fitting for a contact lens will be referred to the designated practice/clinic via Pharmaoutcomes or email and then seen for an initial assessment to determine the type of contact lens needed. Depending on eligibility, this service may be free, or the patient may be asked to pay an annual sum to cover the cost of the lenses and clinician time.

All appointments should be claimed through Pharmaoutcomes.
